Summertime… Summertime….Fishing has been pretty good all week here at the beach. The wind was truckin’ a few days but overall fishing was decent. I’ve had some great folks on board who have made the fishing fun. That’s just it about fishing. If you show up looking to have fun and enjoy the day you will catch fish, thats just how it is.
We’ve been doing some fly fishing this week on the jetties, catching a mix of stripers and bluefish. Pretty typical for this time of year. Not the best fly rodding we do for the season, but lots of fun when the conditions allow. Sinking lines work best at periods of moderate tides. Lots of snapper blues around and schoolie stripers. Red and White clouser minnows worked good this week.
Did lots of flounder fishing too, more of the norm. Actually did really well on the flounders, had five keeper fish on a short trip Thursday out of a few dozen we caught. Had eight keepers today again out of a couple dozen or so fish. We have had some good clear water in the afternoons which has been a help. Live bunker and finger mullets have been the best baits for us. Jigs tipped with minnows worked too. Had some nice fish in the 21″ - 22″ range.
Had a decent morning live baiting stripers yesterday. Didn’t catch any legal keepers, but had lots of bites while fishing bunkers and caught some nice schoolies. There is a lot of bait showing up in the back bays, spot, mullet, bunker. Seems a favorite method of many anglers here on the coast to fish live baits. No need to argue that it is incredibly effective for a variety of species of fish.
